The gender gap in the recording industry

I would like to start posting to this blog as a resource for various entertainment trends from all aspects. The first article is relating to the gender gap in the recording industry.

“The majority of people working behind the scenes are still male (66%). In London, women represent only 30%. Another staggering statistic is that 47% of women in the music industry earn less than £10,000 (www.guardian.co.uk).” The majority of upper management is male according to the article and about fifteen percent female. The UK article acknowledges the CEO of Stax Records and various other women who felt belittled by the author’s comments. However, it is just a small cross section of data on the issue.

Similarly, this business like most corporate structures believes family life style may leak over into your professional life especially as a woman on the rise.
All industry professionals know that the job requires these people spend many late night at gigs in multiple cities. “"The entertainment industry demands a high level of travel and out-of-hours work. It is not a matter of whether your kids mind or not, but whether you have enough money to pay for a nanny (www.guardian.co.uk)."

Not so, for Rough Trade, who employs more women than men for their organization expecting everyone to change the landscape and pick the most qualified candidates for various positions in the field of entertainment. The article asks the following questions to you the reader, “Would the musical landscape and the way artists are promoted and marketed be different? Would the music industry be better off for it? I think it would (www.guardian.co.uk).”
